Some people are "evening people", others "morning people". What does this mean? It's simple: some have no difficulty waking from sleep — they become immediately functional and alert, they enjoy the morning, a time when their ideas flow freely and enthusiasm is present. For me, as an "evening person", it's quite the opposite: the morning is synonymous with anxiety and dark thoughts. I struggle to emerge from sleep, and getting up requires a conscious effort. "Morning people" generally have no trouble going to bed and falling asleep. "Evening people" don't really like going to bed; they take longer to fall asleep. I have always been an "evening person". It's around eight or nine o'clock in the evening that I am most intellectually alert (if I may say so); it's in the evening that I feel the greatest joy of living and mental excitement.
I feel admiration and envy for those who are "morning people", who go to bed early, at nine o'clock, and rise feeling completely refreshed as early as five o'clock. All the while knowing that this admiration is unwarranted: these aptitudes are, after all, genetic. They cannot be commanded.
